In the past year, what have you gained or saved for yourself? What good could you do for people who are still in need?

The act of giving Zakat is a powerful way to share your blessings with those who are fighting to survive. This Ramadan, your Zakat can bring a message of solidarity and hope to refugees and displaced people worldwide.

Don’t delay in putting your Zakat to meaningful use. Donate to the UNHCR Zakat Refugee Fund to ensure that those affected by conflict, persecution, or disaster are able to observe the holy month with greater peace of mind.

UNHCR Refugee Zakat Fund

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) serves displaced people around the world, including families and children who have been forced to flee their homes, who face unimaginable risk and uncertainty while leaving all they know behind.

Your Ramadan giving can help forcibly displaced people find relief, safety and community.

Through the UNHCR Refugee Zakat Fund, your donation will be used to provide families in need with shelter, food, water and medicine. Your gift could mean medicine for an elderly person needing urgent medical care, a safe roof over the head of a widowed mother and her children, or a warm meal on an iftar table to make sure a family doesn’t have to go to bed hungry.

“Although UNHCR is not a Faith-Based organization, it has established an Islamic Philanthropy program, which meets with Muslims’ values. I believe this program is a breakthrough for Muslims; it is trusted, Sharia-Compliant and dedicates 100% of all Zakat funds to be distributed to refugees in need, with zero overhead costs. It is our collective responsibility to contribute in alleviating the suffering of our refugee brothers and sisters.” – Imam Dr. Hamid Slimi

Because of the deep importance of Zakat and specific requirements for how it is distributed, the UNHCR Zakat Refugee Fund is an ideal way to fulfill those obligations and make sure your contributions support people who need your help the most.

2022 Ramadan Giving

This Ramadan, refugees are still facing many of the challenges brought about by COVID-19, along with other emerging threats that are further compounding their struggle.

Did you know that sixty percent of refugees and internally displaced people are from predominantly Islamic countries? About 85 percent of these refugees are hosted in low- and middle-income countries, which are dealing with financial challenges and fragile health systems.

These nations, which continue to generously host so many of our brothers and sisters seeking safe harbor, need more support to address their urgent needs. Your Zakat dedication will make such an important difference.

100% of your Zakat donation will be distributed directly to displaced people in need of food, medicine, shelter and social support.

You can impact someone’s life immediately by donating today.

What is Zakat? How is it calculated?

The purpose of Zakat is that all self-supporting adults who have more resources than they need should share a portion to help look after those still struggling.

Zakat is calculated as a small percentage of the wealth or income that we’ve saved for a lunar year – only 2.5% per person.

UNHCR makes Zakat giving easier with their Zakat Calculator. You can determine and dedicate your Zakat simply by entering your assets and liabilities into the calculator, which will provide the Zakat calculation based on 2022 Nisab values.

There are innumerable ways to approach giving, so you may wish to calculate your donation amount in another way. Zakat isn’t meant to be obligatory to all – the purpose is for everyone to give to the best of their abilities and fulfill their social and spiritual obligations.

If you aren’t ready to formally dedicate your Zakat yet, a one-time or monthly Sadaqah donation will reach displaced families with the same essential life-sustaining support. Your gift is meaningful and impactful, regardless of your reason for giving.

Why Donate to UNHCR?

As an International Zakat distribution partner, with a 70-year history of supporting refugees, UNHCR is a trusted agency to help support the world’s most vulnerable people. UNHCR has received the Nobel Peace Prize two times in its history.

Through respectful and collaborative relationships, UNHCR and its partners deliver essential aid to refugees and displaced people facing the terrifying risks of war, famine, and natural disasters.

By donating to the UNHCR Refugee Zakat Fund and Sadaqah programs, you can provide gifts of nourishing food, life-saving health care, cash assistance, and emergency shelter to brothers and sisters who are in desperate need.

When everyone with the means makes a contribution, our gifts add up to help free others from suffering. When we pool our resources as a community to help those in the greatest need, every gift combines with the others towards an even larger impact.
