What is happening in Ukraine?

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022, escalating a conflict that had already affected the country since 2014. Four years later, the war continues to cause widespread destruction, displacement and suffering.

In 2026, an estimated 10.8 million people in Ukraine need humanitarian assistance and protection. Around 3.7 million people remain internally displaced, while nearly six million Ukrainian refugees remain abroad. Repeated attacks on homes, energy systems and other essential infrastructure continue to put civilians at risk and disrupt access to heating, electricity and water.

The humanitarian needs remain immense, particularly in frontline areas and communities affected by ongoing hostilities. Many families have been displaced more than once, while others face damaged homes, uncertain futures and limited access to essential services.

UNHCR has worked in Ukraine since 1994 and has supported people affected by the conflict since 2014. Today, we work alongside government authorities, local organizations and humanitarian partners to provide emergency shelter, cash assistance, protection services and essential relief items. We also support displaced people, returnees and war-affected communities as they work to recover and rebuild their lives.

What is UNHCR doing?

UNHCR, is working with the authorities, other UN agencies, IDP community groups and partners to provide humanitarian assistance wherever possible. Core relief items such as mattresses, blankets, plastic sheets, containers for water, cooking utensils and hygiene kits are being distributed. Emergency shelter kits are being provided to help protect homes in need of repair. Cash assistance is also being provided to support in providing shelter to those who need it the most.
