UNHCR on US Government announcement of its intention to build a wall at its border with Mexico

25 JANUARY 2017

“UNHCR has taken note of the announcement by the US Government of its intention to build a wall at the border with its neighbour, Mexico. UNHCR will closely follow the impact of this decision for people seeking refuge in the United States. UNHCR will continue to engage actively and constructively with the U.S. Government as we have done for decades.

At a time of enormous needs for the protection of refugees, we hope that the US will continue its strong leadership role and long tradition of protecting those who are fleeing conflict and persecution.”
