Thousands displaced by escalating conflict in South Sudan’s Greater Upper Nile Region
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is alarmed by the escalating armed conflict in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state which has displaced at least 20,000 people since August, some of them forced to flee for their lives up to four times as the conflict rages. At least 3,000 people have already fled to neighbouring Sudan, further intensifying South Sudan’s refugee crisis, the largest in Africa.
UNHCR receives record support for forcibly displaced people as they face a daunting year
Governments pledged US$ 1.13 billion today to provide help and a lifeline to people displaced from their homes by war, violence and human rights violations, supporting the work of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in 2023. Along with a commitment of US$ 400 million from UNHCR’s private sector National Partners, the total amount announced is US$ 1.53 billion.
