Sudan Situation

Millions have been forced to flee.

Sudan is facing one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, driven by a power struggle between rival military forces. The fighting has crippled the economy and pushed millions into hunger, while humanitarian organizations struggle to deliver aid because of insecurity, blocked access, and growing needs.

What is happening in Sudan?

Sudan is now the world’s largest displacement crisis. Around one in three people in Sudan has been forced to flee their home, driving one of the biggest displacement emergencies globally. Nearly 12 million people are displaced, including millions who remain uprooted inside the country and more than four million refugees who have fled to neighbouring countries, most of them to Chad and Egypt. More than 30 million people – most of Sudan’s population – urgently need humanitarian assistance. Children make up the majority of those uprooted, while hunger, disease outbreaks, and climate shocks are deepening suffering. Humanitarian efforts are stretched to the limit by insecurity, access constraints, and severe funding shortfalls.

What is UNHCR doing?

UNHCR is providing life-saving support both inside Sudan and across the region.

In Sudan, UNHCR is helping refugees and displaced families by providing:

  • Emergency shelter
  • Health care and psychosocial support
  • Protection services
  • Cash assistance to help families meet basic needs
  • Essential household items such as blankets, kitchen supplies, and hygiene kits

In neighbouring countries including Chad, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic, UNHCR:

  • Assists people fleeing Sudan at border areas
  • Helps move refugees from overcrowded border locations to safer refugee camps
  • Supports transit centres for around 800,000 South Sudanese returnees who were living in Sudan before the conflict

Across the region, UNHCR also:

  • Leads a coordinated regional response with 111 partner organisations to support refugees, returnees, and other people affected by the crisis in seven countries
  • Supporting longer-term improvements such as access to schools and health services for displaced families and the communities hosting them

Despite these efforts, severe funding shortages are putting this critical work at risk.

Did you know that more than half of Sudan’s population needs urgent, life-saving humanitarian support?

“There are days when I don’t eat. The last time I didn’t eat was the day before yesterday. I just lay down and drank water that day. My children didn’t eat either and they were crying because of hunger.”
