This series is dedicated in loving memory of Abdul.

Sadly, Abdul died as a result of a heart attack during the making of this documentary. He was a devoted, loving father and a man of great determination.

His death comes as a great loss to the family, but Farida is still keen to share her story and show how your support is making a massive difference to families like hers.

Making a better world

Over the past months you’ve shared in the challenges faced by Farida and her children, as they’ve adjusted to life in Za’atari and tried to cope with the loss of Abdul.

Thank you for standing with refugee families like theirs. Your continued support will help in so many ways.

Over the weeks and months to come UNHCR will let you know how your support can mean more than just survival, giving families the opportunity to build a better future and a chance to one day go home or find a new place to call home. There are so many ways in which your continued support will help.

Your ongoing support can reunite families separated by conflict.

When families become separated amidst the chaos of conflict, their first priority is finding each other. Children, especially, become all the more distressed if they lose their parents in a situation that is already hugely unsettling. Separation causes extreme stress and anxiety during situations that can already be extremely upsetting and disorienting. With your continued support, UNHCR will do all we can to reunite families affected in this way. We’ll tell you about our work to reunite families and introduce you to some of the people; husbands and wives, parents and children, your support helps us bring back together.

Helping people build sustainable livelihoods.

People may flee their homes with just the clothes on their backs, but they always carry with them something of considerable value: their knowledge, skills and experience. A few of the more fortunate ones manage to bring along productive assets, such as tools, livestock or money. But no matter how much or how little they arrive with, people have the potential to become self-reliant in their places of refuge. We’ll keep in touch, so you can learn more about how, with your support, UNHCR helps people tap into this potential and build a platform for a better future.

Helping families find home again.

Exile can end for refugees in different ways. For some it means going back to their home and property. For others it means creating a new home as they formally become citizens of the country they fled to; and for a third group it means resettling to a new country to start a new life. We value your support, and will share the stories of some of the people you’re helping to make these difficult transitions. With your continued support, UNHCR can help families find home again, providing specialist advice, guidance and practical help in returning home or finding a new place to live.

Thank you for helping refugee families to survive – and to build safe, sustainable futures. Continue learning more about Episode 7 of Between Lives.
