Ensure UNHCR will be there
for tomorrow’s refugees

Deliver shelter and protection for people forced to flee

Starting again after a crisis takes more than courage—it takes compassion from people around the world. By leaving a gift in your will, you can extend hope and protection to the refugees of tomorrow. Your legacy becomes a powerful act of solidarity with people forced to flee violence, persecution, and conflict.

As global displacement continues to rise, your future gift helps UNHCR plan ahead and respond where the need is greatest. It ensures lifesaving support for some of the world’s most vulnerable people—today and for generations to come.

Ways to leave your legacy

For as long as people are displaced, UNHCR will continue to answer the call to support millions of displaced people—today, tomorrow and for years to come. Here are a few ways you can support refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people.

Gift in your will: A gift in your will is an investment in long-term solutions for some of the world’s greatest challenges. Your gift can be
for a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the residue of your estate.

Gift of stocks and securities: Gifts of securities can include stocks, bonds, mutual funds and certificates of deposits. These types of
gifts can be made today or through your estate.

Gift through a Donor-Advised Fund: A gift from your donor-advised fund is a simple and flexible way to support lasting change. You can recommend a one-time or recurring grant from your Donor-Advised Fund during your lifetime, or name us as a beneficiary of your fund as part of your legacy plans.

Important information for your will

Leaving a gift in your will has no impact on your current assets, cash flow, or your lifestyle today. It’s also one of the most efficient ways to give as it can reduce the tax burden on your beneficiaries. To support you in your estate planning, we’ve compiled some of the most important information you may need when speaking to your financial advisor.

residue of your estate.

Specific Amount: “I give to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees the sum of $____ to be used for its general purposes.”

Percentage of Estate: “I give to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees _______percent of the value of my estate to be used for
its general purposes.”

Residual Gift: “I give to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees _________percent of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate

Why give this way?

Simple: A legacy gift in your will is easy to arrange. Simply instruct your lawyer to include a charitable donation to UNHCR Canada.

Convenient: A gift in your will can make a significant impact in the lives of refugees. It has no impact on your current assets, cash flow or your lifestyle today.

Flexible: Your gift can be for a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the residue of your estate (a gift after your debts have been paid and other gifts made).

Tax relief: A legacy gift in your will is a highly effective way to reduce taxes for your estate.

Tax planning: UNHCR Canada issues a charitable tax receipt for the full value of your gift. This receipt will be used to reduce any tax payable on your final tax return. If your gift exceeds 100% of your net income, the excess may be carried back to the previous tax year or forward as part of a Graduated Rate Estate plan.

Memorialize: Your gift can symbolize a lasting memorial for you, your family or anyone you may wish to honour.

Peace of mind: You can make changes to your will at any time.
