It is a real honour and great pleasure to join you today at this 8th Annual Conference of the Refugee Law Initiative. The collective efforts of experts of your calibre in advancing refugee law and protection are indispensable in these trying times. This is a legal field in which high-quality research, critical analysis and informed debate are more important than ever.

UNHCR: As crisis deepens in Lebanon, more flee to Syria and beyond to escape bombs

To date, most displacement has been internal – with Government estimates citing 1 million people having fled inside Lebanon. Over 185,000 people – mainly Syrians and Lebanese – have fled to Syria, according to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC). Israeli strikes overnight targeting the road in the no-man’s land at the key Masnaa border crossing have halted traffic, effectively closing this route for vehicles. Some of those determined to flee crossed on foot.

UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, Raouf Mazou, yesterday concluded a three-day visit to Haiti, where he witnessed the devastating impact of the country’s dire security situation. Armed groups have severely restricted access to essential humanitarian aid, deepening the crisis for vulnerable communities with devastating effects for future generations.
