What We Do
We help displaced people.
UNHCR is the world’s leading refugee agency, providing and coordinating international relief for displaced people at every stage of their ordeal—in emergencies and in long-term camps and settlements, eventually helping them return home safely or rebuild their lives elsewhere.
UNHCR is often faced with emergencies that force thousands—sometimes millions—of people to flee their homes. During these crises, we are able to respond in as little as 72 hours, rushing in humanitarian aid and expert response teams to lead efforts and save lives.
Our goal is to provide lasting solutions for the people we assist. We aim to help refugees return home whenever possible, but when war and violence drag on, we provide the help they need—like education, psychological counselling and livelihood support—to rebuild their lives in a new home.
UNHCR can deploy humanitarian aid and expert response teams within 72 hours of a large-scale emergency to jump-start relief and protection assistance for more than 600,000 newly displaced people.
