Incessant violence across much of Iraq 's central and southern regions is forcing thousands of people to leave their homes every month. The looming humanitarian crisis is even larger than the upheaval aid agencies had planned for during the 2003 war.

UNHCR has a limited presence in Iraq with international staff restricted to Baghdad and Erbil. UNHCR estimates that more than 4 million Iraqis are currently displaced from their homes, including some 2.2 million inside Iraq and up to 2 million refugees.
