Fundraise for refugees by doing what you love!

Organise a fundraising campaign or event on behalf of UNHCR Canada and help improve the lives of millions of people in need. UNHCR supporters raise money for refugees by doing the things they like to do. People run, cycle, surf, bake, climb mountains, hold parties or play live concerts, all to help refugees around the world.

Every year UNHCR provides critical aid to people who have fled their homes in order to escape violence and persecution. Donations make it possible to bring water, food, shelter and medical care. They also allow us to help refugees return to their homelands, or begin rebuilding their lives in new countries.

Whether you’re in a team, flying solo, at school or in a workplace—everyone can join in and help those forced to flee.

How to get started
Check out our step by step guide to setting up your fundraiser below. Whether you’re in a local community group, in a school or university or going solo, we have you covered.
Community/Local Events

Community events are a great way to unite locals around a common cause and to have fun along the way! Hold a bake sale, trivia night, concert or other event in your local area and support those forced to flee. Maybe your book club can make cakes to sell to friends and family, your kids’ school could hold a fete, or your sports club can hold a gala day with a fundraising fee for entry—the possibilities are endless!

Organizing an event or fundraiser can be hard work, but we’ll be there to support you every step of the way.

  • Need ideas? Gather a group of friends, family or members of your local group together for a brainstorming session. The more heads working together, the better, and no idea is too outlandish!
  • Have your fundraising idea? Tell us about it—email donorcare@unhcr.ca or call us on +1 416-926-7979. We can provide you with the materials you need to make your fundraiser a success, including posters, brochures and more. Just contact us and we will help you get the ball rolling.
  • Download our fundraising toolkit to get fundraising tips and tricks, planning checklists to help your fundraiser run like clockwork, event ideas and more!
  • Share far and wide! Now your event is up and going, publicize widely on Facebook, Twitter, via email, with posters in local shops, by word of mouth—get the word out there!
  • When your fundraiser is done and dusted, give yourself a huge congratulations on the work that you have done to help refugees! You can mail or transfer the funds collected by direct deposit or debit the proceeds of the event to us—and don’t forget to tell us how your fundraiser went! We want to see photos, hear about your success and learn how we can further help other fundraisers like you in the future.
Schools/Universities

Getting your school or university or school involved is a way of making a huge impact for those forced to flee—not only will you be raising crucial funds, you’ll also be raising awareness of humanitarian and refugee issues to your peers.

Organise a film night, hold a panel discussion, host a DJ night, hold a corridor slumber party at your dorms—there are many ways to get your college community supporting refugees!

Once you’ve committed to helping refugees, we’ll be there to support you every step of the way.

Solo Challenge

There are hundreds of ways that you as an individual can fundraise for refugees.

Maybe you are looking to achieve a personal best this year—run a marathon, climb a mountain, maybe even learn a new skill or quit a bad habit! Whatever your goal is, tie it to a fundraising goal and get your friends, families and colleagues to urge you onwards by donating. By achieving that personal best you have not only helped yourself but have made a huge difference to families forced to flee.

Once you’ve committed to helping refugees, we’ll be there to support you every step of the way.
