Real people, real needs

Around the world in 118 countries, 34.5 million people are uprooted. Each one is a real person who needs our help. UNHCR provides much more than a safe haven and shelter supplies for the millions of refugees and displaced people of concern to us. With the help of supporters like you, we ensure that refugees receive shelter, water and important basic health care, including vaccines, and mosquito nets to prevent malaria. We give access to education and vocational training, so the displaced can rebuild their lives and support their families. Below are four key UNHCR priorities for refugees who urgently need our help:

Protection:
A Secure Environment, Protection from Violence and Exploitation

    THE SITUATION
Refugees are still exposed to discrimination, attacks and gender based violence. In at least 15 countries, children are at risk of being recruited by armed groups, forced to become child soldiers or workers. In 64 countries, the displaced do not have access to justice systems – a denial of their basic human rights.

    THE MISSION

  • Provide counseling, community education, and access to justice to reduce gender violence.
  • Register refugees in order to reunite families and give faster access to essential services.
  • Design and staff camps to ensure a safe haven, to reduce risks of attack, gender violence, and child recruiting.

Shelter:
Basic Needs and Essential Services

    THE SITUATION
There are still glaring gaps in providing enough food, clean water, sanitation and shelter: tents, blankets and cooking stoves. 73 camps have unacceptably high levels of malnutrition. 96 camps have inadequate sanitation. More than 50% of refugee camps do not meet the minimum water standard of 20 litres per person per day.

    THE MISSION

  • Improve feeding programs for infants and young children.
  • Augment food supplies through small-scale agricultural projects and multi-storey gardens.
  • Increase delivery of non-food items like cooking fuel, soap, mosquito nets and sanitary materials.
  • Ensure adequate clean water for all in more camps.

Health:
Primary Health Care and Education

    THE SITUATION
Mortality rates among the displaced are unacceptably high in 27 countries. Vaccination for measles is needed for children in many countries. Basic health care and bed nets to prevent malaria are in short supply. In 132 refugee camps, 31% of children 6 to 11 are not enrolled in school.

    THE MISSION

  • Reduce rates of disease and mortality for refugees in 18 of these countries.
  • Provide measles vaccine, basic health care and malaria prevention for all.
  • Ensure 80% of children and 40% of adolescents in camps and urban areas enroll
    in schools.

Livelihoods:
Durable Solutions and Community Participation

    THE SITUATION
In 23 countries, the displaced are denied the right, by law, to use their skills to earn a living. Women, especially, lack the work opportunities they need to support their children and rebuild their lives. Urban refugees who are denied jobs are most vulnerable. But the displaced in camps also need access to gainful employment.

    THE MISSION

  • Increase access to land, irrigation, for agricultural production and animal husbandry in 5 countries.
  • Improve access to livelihoods for the displaced through skills training in 5 of these countries.
  • Sustainable small business support and small savings and loans for refugees returning home in at least 7 countries.
