  Emergency in Darfur Appeal

  For the last several years, the world’s attention has been on the human catastrophe underway in the western Sudanese province of Darfur . UNHCR has been in the region since the first thousands of refugees fled to Chad , and we continue to operate 12 refugee camps in this inhospitable desert region. The need to continue our work in this region is ever more vital as the violence creates new levels of insecurity. While providing water, shelter, and safety, UNHCR is also providing for the needs of local Chadians, who themselves are incredibly poor, while working with the global community to diplomatically resolve the violence in Darfur . Donations to this emergency are being used to support camp management and security, provide medical assistance, ensure that clean water is available and to guarantee shelter to the victims of this tragedy.
