Water: essential to life

Refugees need a minimum of 7 litres per person per day, just to survive. In the arid regions where many of the displaced are forced to seek shelter, they need more. And to ensure minimum standards of health and sanitation, they need 20 litres of water per person each day.

In the emergency phase, water is brought to the refugees by truck, and is typically stored in large plastic reservoirs. Once immediate needs are met, then more sustainable water supplies are found by digging wells, building water tanks and developing rudimentary water distribution systems.
